This season the Centre chorégraphique national de Grenoble is presenting a spectacle entitled Variations Autour Du Rock. The original feature of this mix of choreography and music is that rock ‘n’ roll and contemporary dance, both of which were born in the United States in the early nineteen fifties, have never met on the same stages or influenced one another. Even so the choreographer Jean-Claude Gallotta sees the meeting with rock ‘n’ roll as vitally important precisely because it was the soundtrack to his teenage daydreams.
Performed by five dancers from the Centre chorégraphique and set to songs taken from some of the most crucial albums in rock ‘n’ roll history, this show weaves together dance and commentary by the choreographer putting each singer into the context of his time.
Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Leonard Cohen and Wilson Pickett are all on the bill for this show designed to allow contemporary dance to soak up influences from another culture it had previously overlooked and once again to enhance the subtle relationships it has always had with music.
In addition, resulting from the representation, the audience is invited to come on stage to learn a short extract from the choreography and then to perform it.
