With My Rock and Bach danse experience, the Company had worked on the change of tempo. With Les Chroniques chorégraphiques, it’s the very structure of the piece that sets the rhythm; in a succession of sequences, the “chronicles” define a separate genre, a journey in which the stage takes the place of the road. Let’s call it a stage movie.
Last spring’s auditions gave us an opportunity for a whole new set of encounters: with the people who dance, obviously, but also with people who pass by and people who think. We put them all together on the stage to see what happened. One who dares and one who rambles on… why not try them as a duo. Les Chroniques chorégraphiques tries to give us an account of the world. At least, the world as we modestly see it through the studio window or, sometimes, through a few portholes; what we understand of it, with our own movements, words and music. It also shows our reactions - sometimes immediate – to topical events. With Jean-Claude Gallotta on the “scratching” turntables and CD player, we have a little cabaret of reactive sequences.
By inviting the public into the Dance Centre studio , we’re showing them that the performance will be even freer, with a mix of daring, rarity, courage and questioning; the auditorium will resound with the political, the poignant, the not-too-sad, the incorrect, the very serious and the very light-hearted. That’s the way it is at the end of this first decade: faced with the century and its incongruities, dance has a word to say, and a move to make.
